3,000 Mangrove Seedlings are Planted to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Makassar
Makassar, September 12, 2024 – The KEHATI Foundation, in collaboration with PT Sankyu Indonesia International, planted 3,000 mangrove tree seedlings in the Lantebung Mangrove Coastal Area of Makassar, also known as a mangrove forest tourism area. This activity aims to support the greenhouse gas emission reduction program while expanding Makassar’s Green Open Space/Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH), which is targeted to reach 5,273.1 hectares or 30% of the total area.
“The activity of today’s mangrove seedling planting is an expression of our gratitude in celebrating of our company’s 50th anniversary, and also our support for the RAN GRK (Greenhouse Gas Reduction Action Plan) program and the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) of Makassar,” said Ikuo Morino, President Director of PT Sankyu Indonesia International, during the planting event. This activity also led to an agreement on the mangrove restoration and disaster mitigation and climate change program signed by PT Sankyu Indonesia International and the KEHATI Foundation on August 6, 2024.
This restoration activity is important as the Lantebung Mangrove Area is the only remaining mangrove forest are in Makassar. Mangrove planting activity helps to revive the ecological and physical functions of mangrove forests as a buffer against the threats of coastal erosion and abrasion while also providing a habitat for the nurturing and breeding ground for various marine species.
PT Sankyu expects that the mangrove rehabilitation will contribute to carbon absorption of 1,025 tons per year and increase Makassar City’s Green Open Space/Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH), which is targeted to reach 5,273.1 hectares or 30% of the total area. According to Makassar Environment Agency/Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (DLH) data as of the end of 2023, Makassar’s RTH area remains at around 11.47%.
The seedlings planted include Rhizophora spp and Sonneratia spp. The planting was carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian Marine Conservation Foundation / Yayasan Konservasi Laut (YKL) and local coastal communities that manage the Lantebung mangrove area.
On the same occasion, Riki Frindos, Executive Director of the KEHATI Foundation, explained that the Mangrove Blue Carbon Program not only has ecological impacts but also economic and social benefits. “The mangrove conservation program has already positively impacted many communities through education, research, ecotourism, culinary activities, etc. We hope this activity succeeds and becomes a learning model for other regions across Indonesia,” said Riki. The Mangrove Blue Carbon Program has already been implemented by the KEHATI Foundation in several areas across Indonesia, including Donggala Regency, Brebes Regency, Pandeglang Regency, and other regions.
