Mangrove Restoration for Biodiversity and Blue Carbon
The KEHATI Foundation's Mangrove Rehabilitation Learning Site on the coast of Lantebung, Bira Village, Tamalanrea District, Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Mangrove forests protect homes and livelihoods of communities by providing coastal protection against climate-related disasters such as storms, tsunamies, and reducing the risks of floods, inundation, and erosion.
Mangrove ecosystems serve as an effective solution to global climate change issues, as mangrove plants are able to absorb and store CO2 much more effectively than tropical forests.
Besides for ecological and physical functions, Mangrove Forests provide economic benefits in the form of income from goods and environmental services, especially ecotourism and fishery products and other products such as mangrove crabs, syrup, batik and crackers.
Coastal Restoration Collaboration, 5.000 Mangroves planted for a green future in Makassar
PT Sankyu Indonesia International together with the Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation (KEHATI) and the Indonesian Marine Conservation (YKL), replanted and nurtured 5.000 mangrove sedes in the Lantebung Mangrove Coastal Area, Makassar City.
This activity which was held on Thursday (30/10/2025) is part of the company’s sustainable commitment to supporting coastal ecosystem restoration and climate change mitigation.
This planting covers 3.000 new seeds and 2.000 nurtured seeds on area of 5.000 square meters. The three types of mangroves planted are Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Avicennia officinalis.
Besides to restoring the ecological function of coastal areas, this activity also contributes to efforts to increase green open spaces (GOS) in Makassar City.
Real Support for Mangrove Rehabilitation
This lively activity marked by a spirit of collaboration, was attended by representatives from PT Sankyu Indonesia International, the KEHATI Foundation, The Indonesian Marine Conservation Foundation (YKL), the Lantebung Mangrove Ecotourism Network (Jekomala), the Lantebung Family Association (IKAL), as well as local fisherman and coastal communities.
In his speech, director of PT Sankyu Indonesia International, Dedi Mufdi, emphasized that this activity is in line with the company’s mission to reduce carbon emissions.
“We are committed to supporting CO2 emission reduction through various ways, including mangrove restoration. On the other hand, we are also striving to develop environmentally friendly logistics businesses and low emision transportation systems. For us, this activity is not only a CSR, but as a part of our global responsibility for a green future.” he said.
PT Sankyu Indonesia International is a subsidiary of Sankyu Group, based in Tokyo, Japan and has been actively contributing in any environmental activities in Indonesia. The mangrove planting action in Lantebung as a manifestation of the company’s gratitude and commitment to coastal ecosystem conservation.

Meanwhile, Program Director of KEHATI Foundation, Rony Megawanto, expressed his appreciation for PT Sankyu’s consistent which Support in mangrove rehabilitation in Lantebung for two consecutive years.
“Mangroves in Makassar have declined. The Lantebung mangrove area is one of the last areas that successfully preserved by the local community. Rehabilitation efforts like this not only add vegetation but also restore ecological functions as natural coastal protectors and carbon sinks,” said Rony. He added that mangrove’s ability to absorb carbon is five times greater than tropical forests, making them a crucial part of global climate change mitigation.

On the same occasion, Executive Director of the Indonesian Marine Conservation Foundation (YKL), Nirwan Dessibali, explained that the Lantebung Area now has developed into a mangrove rehabilitation learning site managed in collaboration with the local community.
“We don’t just plant, but also conduct regular monitoring and maintenance by local facilitators. We learn from our successes and failures so that rehabilitation activities don’t stop at ceremonies, but actually grow a living ecosystem.” said Nirwan.
YKL Indonesia, together with the Jekomala Community Group applies the Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR) approach – a restoration method based on improving ecological conditions so that mangroves can grow naturally. Besides to protecting the coastline, this area also serves as a habitat for crabs, fish and migratory birds that stop along the Makassar coast.
Mangroves: Nature’s Solution for Climate and Life
Indonesia has around 3.44 million hectares of mangroves, or 23 percent of the world’s total mangroves, but each year it stands to lose up to 19.501 hectares. In fact, mangroves has a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Through a collaboration between PT Sankyu Indonesia International, KEHATI Foundation, and YKL Indonesia, rehabilitation activities such as this are expected to strengthen the resilience of the Makassar coastline, improve community welfare, and serve as a concrete example of multi stakeholder collaboration in nature based climate action.
